One of the quickest ways to get information out to people is through in person events. Many colleges have fairs, picnics, and event days, so one of my deliverables had to be an event kit. To be effective, it has to be eye catching, welcoming, and provide something that students want.

Branded Tent
The branded tent does double duty. It draws attention and provides important affirmations like “you should eat something” and “Food is for everyone,” and protects volunteers from sun and rain. It gives volunteers a space to gather and distribute information and swag, take surveys, and talk about campus resources. This tent has three walls and a table with a tablecloth for the spin the wheel game.

Spin the Wheel
Often, a flyer isn’t enough to capture interest. In my experience working various in-person events as a volunteer, people LOVE free stuff. Even more than that, they love playing Spin the Wheel to win free stuff. Everyone wins with this version of the game. There are slots for snacks, small prizes, and even a gift card for free groceries. The prizes are stigma free–rather than feeling like charity, they are something fun that anyone can appreciate, while also giving volunteers the opportunity to provide informational resources, talk about the food share, or offer volunteer opportunities. The wheel also plays an important role in the ecosystem of COMMN, by providing a connection between the student swag deliverable and the events deliverable, and more importantly, students and volunteers through a relaxed casual activity.
Information
Events are a great way to distribute information. People are drawn to the tent, see the signage, play the game, and are given helpful information about food resources. We have a vertical banner that introduces the campus food share and has a call to action inviting people to scan a QR code to find out how to get free groceries.
